Vendor Spotlight: Live In Mosaics

Live In Mosaics is the small business behind one of Neatly Nested’s most popular wedding/engagement gifts - the mosaic seashell ring dish. Coming in a variety of colors and sizes, the ring dishes are all uniquely different, and created from seashells found on the beaches of South Boston, MA.
I got the chance to catch up with Jessica Charles, the face and brain behind Live In Mosaics. Read on to learn about Jessica, her business, and her inspiration.

Q: How would you describe Live In Mosaics?

A: I started Live In Mosaics to bring style and art into everyday household decor. The combination of design, color palate, and materials that I use make the pieces sophisticated and allow my clients to express their individuality and create a unique space in their home.

Q: Tell us more about your background.

A: I have always had an eye for design and color. After years of working in retail at the likes of Neiman Marcus and Barneys New York, I began to take an interest in mosaic art as a way to bring fashion into the home. While I loved putting together fun and stylish outfits for my clients, I felt the growing urge to express myself more creatively and mosaic art proved to be the perfect outlet.

Q: When did you start the business?

A: In March 2013 ‘Live In Mosaics’ came to life after I returned from studying mosaic art in Venice, Italy. There I received a certificate as a Master in Mosaic.

Creative Process

Q: What made you want to start your own business?

A: I’ve always wanted to own a business. Growing up I wanted to own a clothing store with a sushi bar in it! That led me to major in retail and minor in business during college. Once I started creating mosaics, I wanted to do it everyday and it naturally transitioned from a hobby to a full-blown business.

Q: Where did the name come from?

A: My business name says it all.  LIVE IN MOSAICS.  Surround you and your environment with mosaic art. Let the positive feelings the pieces project enhance YOUR personal world!

Q: What is your favorite product right now?

A: A gradient bathroom mirror that I created in tranquil shades of soft marbled cream, a vibrant sea green and a deep blue stained glass. I meticulously hand cut each tile and place them individually to create the pattern. The design evokes a calming and serene feeling.

Q: Pick 3 words to describe yourself!

A: Creative, thoughtful, funny

Q: Where/who do you get your inspiration from?

A: I am inspired by the beauty of nature, the texture and feel of fine fabrics, and the reflection of light on everyday objects.  I enjoy incorporating the feelings these bring me, into my mosaic art pieces.

Q: What is your favorite part about the business?

A: I love coming up with new designs. I never know exactly how they are going to look in the end, which is invigorating. Even after gluing down all the pieces I’m still left with the anticipation of how it will look in the end. When I grout the piece, I finally get to see my idea come to life. The whole process is so exciting to me!

Q: What is your main role in the everyday operations of the business?

A: I wear most every hat in my business. However, on most days you will find me in the studio creating mosaics and answering client emails.
